Between the end of 1953 and the beginning of 1954 Pope Pio XII had a physical breakdown from stress. He was unable to eat and when he did try he would vomit the food back up. He was also annoyed by nausea and hiccup. The only respite he got were short sleeps of half hours. Eventually it was necessary to feed him artificially. While the Pope was sick, Father Pio promised to pray for him and also offered up to God his own health and life instead of the Pope.
