On January 21st, 1990 Father Pio was declared venerable, he was beatified on May 2, 1999 and proclaimed a saint on June 16, 2002 in St. Peter's Square by Pope John Paul II as Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. His feast is celebrated on September 23.
